Stump Grinding in South Jersey
That stump in your yard is not just an eyesore. It takes up space, attracts pests, and can be a tripping hazard. We grind stumps down below grade so you can reclaim your yard. Fast, clean, and done right the first time.
What Is Stump Grinding and Why Does It Matter?
When a tree gets cut down, the stump stays behind. Left in the ground, it rots slowly over years, attracts termites, carpenter ants, and other wood-boring insects, and can become a tripping hazard for kids and adults alike. Sprouting suckers from the roots can also keep coming back, turning one dead tree into an ongoing maintenance problem.
Stump grinding uses a rotating cutting wheel to chip the stump down below the surface of the ground. We typically grind 6 to 10 inches below grade, which is deep enough to plant grass or install landscaping over the spot. The resulting wood chips can be used as mulch or hauled away.
It is the fastest, most cost-effective way to deal with a leftover stump. Full stump and root removal is also an option for situations where you need to build on the spot or plant a new tree, but grinding handles the vast majority of residential and commercial stump jobs.

Reasons Homeowners Call Us About Stumps
Stumps cause more problems than most people expect. Here is what we hear most often.
It's a Safety Hazard
A stump sticking up in your lawn is a trip-and-fall waiting to happen, especially for children playing in the yard or guests who do not know it is there. Liability aside, it is just not something you want in a yard people use.
Pests Are Moving In
Rotting wood is prime real estate for termites, carpenter ants, beetles, and other wood-boring insects. Once they establish a colony in a stump, they can spread to your fence, deck, or home. Grinding removes the food source before that happens.
Sprouts Keep Coming Back
Many tree species send up new shoots from the root system after being cut down. Oak, sweetgum, and cherry are common offenders in South Jersey. The tree is gone but the roots are still alive and trying to grow. Grinding disrupts the root crown and stops most of this regrowth.
It's Killing Your Lawn Mower
Trying to mow around a stump every week is frustrating and hard on equipment. Hitting a root with a mower blade is expensive. Grinding the stump out solves the problem permanently so you can mow freely.
You Want to Landscape the Area
Whether you want to plant new grass, install a garden bed, add a patio, or plant a new tree, a stump in the way blocks your options. Grinding clears the space so you can use it however you want.
It Looks Bad
Curb appeal matters, whether you are selling your home or just want to enjoy your yard. An old stump covered in moss or sprouting weeds is not a good look. Grinding it out and filling with topsoil restores a clean, finished appearance.

How Stump Grinding Works
The process is straightforward. Here is what happens from the time you call us to the time the stump is gone.
Free Estimate
We come out, look at the stump or stumps, check for any access issues, underground utilities, or obstacles, and give you a price. No obligation.
Utility Marking
Before any grinding starts, we call 811 (New Jersey One Call) to have underground utilities marked. This is a non-negotiable safety step we never skip.
Grinding
We bring in the grinder and work the stump down 6 to 10 inches below grade. The machine cuts the wood into chips. We work around surface roots as needed.
Cleanup
We rake and remove wood Chips. The area is left clean and level, ready for topsoil and seed or sod.
Should You Grind the Stump or Remove It Entirely?
Stump grinding is the right choice for the large majority of jobs. It is faster, less disruptive to the surrounding yard, and significantly less expensive than full root ball excavation.
Full stump and root removal makes sense in specific situations: if you are pouring a concrete foundation, installing a septic system, or planting a new large tree in the exact same spot. In those cases, the roots need to come out completely.
Choose Grinding If...
- You want to plant grass or a garden over the spot
- You are not building anything structural on top
- You want the fastest, most affordable solution
- Access is limited and excavation equipment cannot get in
Choose Full Removal If...
- You are pouring concrete or building a structure on the spot
- You need the root system gone for drainage work
- You are planting a new large tree in the same location
- Roots are actively damaging a foundation or sewer line
What Affects the Price of Stump Grinding?
Stump Diameter
The wider the stump, the longer it takes to grind. A 12-inch stump is a very different job from a 36-inch oak stump. Most companies price by diameter.
Number of Stumps
Grinding multiple stumps on the same property is more efficient. The setup cost is shared, so the per-stump price drops when you have several to do at once.
Access
A stump in an open backyard is straightforward. A stump behind a fence, on a steep slope, or in a tight space between structures takes more time and may require smaller equipment.
Root Spread
Surface roots that extend several feet from the stump add time to the job. If you want those ground down too, let us know when you call.
